From 1889 To 1895
Sisley spent the summer of 1894 in Le Mesnil-Esnard at the estate of his friend and patron, François Depeaux, a wealthy Norman industrialist.
While there, Sisley painted seven views of the Coteaux de la Bouille and the Sahurs meadows adjacent to Rouen.
Depeaux bought five of the pictures, including the present work.
Poplars, Éragny
This canvas of summer 1895 shows a corner of Pissarro's garden at Éragny, a small village in northern France where he lived from 1884 until his death.
Pissarro likely painted this view from his studio window, as a persistent eye ailment hampered him from working outdoors.
Cypresses
Cypresses was painted in late June 1889, shortly after Van Gogh began his yearlong stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy.
The subject, which he found "beautiful as regards lines and proportions, like an Egyptian obelisk," both captivated and challenged the artist.
One of two close-up views of the "very tall and massive" trees in a vertical format (the other is in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo), Cypresses was shown in the 1890 Salon des Indépendants.
